From sketch to sample: what a leather goods manufacturer needs from you

30 September 2026  ยท  TARS Creations

A clear brief is the fastest way to a good first sample. The more complete it is, the fewer rounds of correction you will need. This is what a leather goods manufacturer looks for.

What to send

  • Sketches or reference photos, ideally from several angles.
  • Dimensions in millimetres: width, height and depth, plus handle drop and strap length where they apply.
  • Leather type, finish and colour, with a swatch or colour reference if the colour is brand-specific.
  • Lining and interior details: pockets, card slots and dividers.
  • Hardware: zips, buckles, rings and finishes, with supplier references if you have them.
  • Construction details: stitching, edge finishing and reinforcement.
  • Branding: the logo file, the method (emboss, deboss or foil), size and position.
  • Labels and packaging.
  • Quantity and target price range.

The sample stages

Proto checks shape and proportion. The fit sample checks measurements and how the product works. The sales sample (SMS) uses the final materials and colours so you can show your buyers. The pre-production sample (PP) is your last approval before production begins.

Tips that save time

  • Send one consolidated brief instead of several partial messages.
  • State the tolerance you accept on key measurements.
  • Approve each stage in writing and note the changes made.
  • Keep a revision number on every specification so everyone works from the latest.
