How to care for a leather bag so it lasts for years
Leather is durable, and a little care makes it last much longer. The most sustainable bag is the one you keep for years.
Everyday care
- Wipe with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust.
- Avoid overfilling, which stretches the leather and stitching.
- Keep it away from sharp objects and rough surfaces.
Water and heat
If leather gets wet, blot it gently and let it dry naturally, away from heaters, direct sun and hair dryers. Heat makes leather stiff and can crack the surface.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, in a dust bag. Lightly stuff the bag with paper to keep its shape, and avoid plastic bags, which trap moisture.
Conditioning
A little leather conditioner once or twice a year helps keep leather supple. Use it sparingly, and test it on a hidden area first, since some finishes darken.
Stains
Deal with marks quickly and gently. For anything stubborn, use a leather specialist rather than household cleaners.
